encountered at a job interview

  • How would you remain focused and motivated whilst performing a repetitive task?
  • How do you think unplanned leave impacts on a team?
  • What do you think are the most important requirements of the position?
  • What would you do if you realized that you had completed your assigned tasks and had no more work?
  • How do you think your accuracy performing the tasks assigned to you would impact on others?
  • I would like to have you think back to when you were 18. What did you see yourself doing and, or what path did you imagine yourself following?
  • Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
  • What sort of interest do you have outside work?
What to Expect in a Job Interview

The following overview provides an outline of current job interview approaches within both the private sector and Government departments.

Telephone Interviews:

Telephone interviews generally take around 30 minutes. You need to keep your answers short and concise and be guided by the Telephone Interviewers prompting to move to the next question, or supply further information. Telephone interviews include areas such as:
  • Ascertaining your availability to attend training and to start in the role
  • Questioning to establish your work history and relevant experience
  • Behavioural questions, which are directly linked to the competencies for the position
  • Questions to assess motivation
  • Questions to assess your computer skills.

Questioning is designed to gauge your response to various situations. Your suitability is assessed by the examples you provide from similar situations you have encountered. You outline approaches you have used in similar situations in the past, and outcomes achieved. .

Selection Panel Interviews:

Selection Panel interviews can take a variety of formats. Frequently these will be a panel of 2 to 3 managers or team leaders from the area where the position is located. This provides senior department personnel the opportunity to meet you in person and ask questions relating to the written application (selection criteria) you have supplied.

Assessment Centre Testing:

Assessment centre testing gives you an opportunity to demonstrate your abilities, gain a stronger understanding of the role and get constructive feedback on your strengths and weaknesses. It may include testing across areas such as:

  • Behavioural interview
  • One-on-one role play testing
  • Team exercises
  • Computer skills testing and/or numeracy, literacy and grammar testing.
